Flashing Read End Device

The Flashing Rear End Device (FRED) is the red light on the back of some modern trains today. It consists of a transponder, brake pipe monitor and flashing red light.

This project was to make a model of this device that is small enough to fit inside an N scale car, while also being usable for G scale.

It is capable of being fed between 2.9 and 25V and still function. It only draws 8 mA to run, and can be powered by either coin cell battery or track power if you have a truck with wires going inside.

There is a button on the board to toggle the mode between solid on (for the red light of a caboose) and blinking for a standalone FRED
